From initial screening to authority approval — the full path of an environmental impact assessment and what is required from you at each step.

What Are the Steps of an Environmental Impact Assessment? A Practical Guide

What is an EIA and why is it required?

An environmental impact assessment is a technical document that evaluates the potential effects of a project or activity on air, water, soil, noise and surrounding communities, and proposes practical measures to mitigate them. The competent authorities require it before licensing many industrial activities, new projects and expansions.

The steps of preparing the study

  • Screening and scoping: determining whether the activity requires a full or partial study, and fixing the scope of work.
  • Project description and environmental baseline: documenting project activities and collecting data on the site's current environmental conditions.
  • Identifying and evaluating impacts: during both construction and operation, across environmental elements.
  • Mitigation plan: practical measures that can actually be implemented on site.
  • Management and monitoring plan: performance indicators and periodic follow-up after operation starts.
  • Review and approval: submitting the study to the competent authority and responding to its comments until the file is complete.

What should you prepare?

Activity and site data, maps, existing permits if any, and data on production, energy, water and waste. The more ready and accurate your data is, the shorter the study timeline and the lower the cost of rework.

A good study is not paperwork for the drawer; it is an operating plan that protects your facility from violations and shortens authority review time. If your project needs an environmental impact assessment, talk to our consultants to define the right scope.
